Community building
Building bridges
We are committed to bringing open source software into the broader movements for social, economic and environmental justice.
Working with other developers and organizations in the open source community, we are actively seeking solutions to make open source software and philosophy more accessible to these broader movements. We are currently strategizing what we can do locally and globally. Please contact us if you wish to be involved!
Closed source software + progressive movements != empowerment
At Colingo Labs, we see a great disconnect between movements for progressive change and the technologies they employ for networking and communication. From our perspective, the philosophies that power the free software and open source movements are in lock-step with those that fuel movements for environmental, social and economic justice. The tenets of community empowerment, individual empowerment, open collaboration, transparency and unfettered access to information span the divide between these real world and e-world movements.
In spite of this, many of the organizations and individuals fighting for a better world rely on technology that is anathema to their broader goals. Closed technologies that put profits before people and stifle collaboration should not provide the infrastructure for social movements.
Got source?
Open source technologies are often criticized as being inaccessible, unreliable and difficult to use. However, with the incredible growth and momentum of the open source community, these inadequacies are quickly melting away. While a lot of open source software has always been incredibly reliable, never before has it been so easy to use and easy to implement as it is today. Besides entire operating systems being available for free (both in terms of price and licensing), countless tools and suites of software now exist to give the old defacto closed source solutions a run for their money.
With the new viability of open source software for use outside the confines of the nerd's garage and software development offices, Colingo Labs aims to incorporate open source software with the movements struggling to make the world a sustainable place.
