Benjamin Lowenstein
As an artist and student of neuroscience, Benjamin Lowenstein has long been fascinated with how people learn and interact with the world around them. He was drawn to working with the internet due to its ability to make free education and communication accessible to all. As he began to explore this potential, he quickly realized the importance of developing interfaces that work smoothly and make sense to people. Graduating Oberlin College in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in neurobiology, he moved to San Francisco wishing to develop Colingo, an emerging tool for free language-learning online. At this point he began to teach himself the plethora of web languages needed to take interfaces from designs to realities.
As a result of developing this project and many others, he now has extensive experience in developing advanced interfaces that work for a wide variety of browsers and operating systems. He codes expert-level Javascript, Actionscript, Flex, PHP and CSS. He traverses the DOM for fun and occasionally has nightmares involving syntax errors in imagined code. He likes to chronicle his technical discoveries on his personal blog.
In addition to his work with Colingo Labs, Lowenstein has done substantial development under contract to Initsoft Web Solutions and in this capacity has taken the leading role in developing Drupal-backed front ends for a number of corporations and organizations, including Meltwater Group, Transition US, Filice Insurance, SpikeSource, and First 5 Ventura County. He has also done custom Javascript development for a Silicon Valley startup still in stealth-mode and Flash development for the frontpage of a publicly traded 1200-person corporation.
Lowenstein often argues loudly for the virtues of open source software and philosophies. He believes that it is crucial to lay out infrastructure for the future that promotes equality and openness. He desires to demonstrate how technology can be used to promote peace rather than wreck destruction.
Beyond his professional life, Lowenstein enjoys volunteering in the San Francisco public schools, speaking Spanish, hiking, traveling, and sunrise yoga. He can often be found meandering through the streets of San Francisco.
